FAQ: Digital & Social Media Investigations

What is and isn't allowed in digital investigations, and how do we handle privacy and GDPR?

What exactly does digital investigation involve?

Digital investigation maps online traces: public social media profiles, posts, photos and other digital sources relevant to your case. This is always carried out within GDPR limits and without hacking into private accounts or devices.

Can you access someone's private social media account or phone?

No. We only investigate publicly accessible sources. Hacking an account, phone or email is not permitted and we never do this, even at a client's request.

Is digital evidence usable in court?

Carefully collected and documented digital evidence can serve as supporting evidence, for example in divorce or employment proceedings. Its evidentiary weight depends on how it was collected and recorded; we document this precisely.

How long does a digital investigation take?

This depends on the amount of publicly available sources and the complexity of the case. A targeted investigation can produce results within a few days; a more extensive investigation takes longer. We give a realistic estimate during the intake.

Can you trace an anonymous sender or account?

In many cases, network and source research can uncover leads that help trace an anonymous sender, although success can't always be guaranteed. We discuss feasibility during the intake.
