Advocatenblad: hiring a detective? A game of risks
In January 2026 Advocatenblad examined the risks of hiring a private investigator in civil proceedings. One of our owners responded.

In its January 2026 issue (published on 3 February 2026), Advocatenblad, the magazine for the Dutch legal profession, published a report by Marco de Vries on hiring a private investigator in civil proceedings. One of our owners was asked for his estimate of how often law firms use investigation bureaus.
The article shows that evidence from an investigation bureau can be attractive, but that a careless investigation brings risks. Recent rulings on summary dismissal, alimony and rental fraud make clear that courts look critically at how the investigation was carried out, the privacy balance and whether the conclusions are really supported by the facts.
Lawyers in the article mention, among other things, the danger of tunnel vision, the importance of hearing the other side and the fact that a photo is only a snapshot. It also shows that some law firms occasionally work with investigation bureaus. One of our owners estimates that about half of firms do.
